Pine is an excellent material for making the smaller English pool tables:

● pine is ecologically sustainable unlike many furniture-quality hardwoods
● in its natural state it is rich in grain and knots with a clean minimalist look
● pine will easily absorb stains and paints to create unlimited range finishes
● pine is well established material for kitchen and garden furniture
● pine is lighter than a hardwood and is therefore more manoeuvrable.

What is an English pool table?

Despite the popularity of pool there is considerable ambiguity on what the word pool means both in the broader sense, and particularly   within the general category of cue-sports. Therefore for simplicity, and for the purposes of this web-section, we define pool as the game that is normally associated with English pubs and that is played with (normally) distinguishing red and yellow balls. It is now also referred to as eight ball pool. For a more specific definition of English pool refer to the new rules set down by English Pool Association an external link (visit a different website)

Most pub-type tables are either a 6ft or 7ft. Although 8ft tables are now available. There is also ambiguity over the size and dimensions of tables for competition play. Because of different specifications adopted by different manufacturers, both historic and current, there does not appear to be a consensus amongst all those involved in the organisation of English pool as a competitive sport . So, for those wishing to buy a competition standard table, it is recommended that they first contact their local league, and or, the websites of the national and international bodies that supervise the sport of eight ball pool.

The Matchtable website specialises in high-end, design led billiard tables. We already address the ambiguity on choosing a pool or snooker table (and the general  confusion over the terminology of billiards) on our home page. In essence, though, most people separate and distinguish between the broad categories of pool tables and snooker tables. And in our case we further separate pool tables into American pool tables, English pool tables, pool dining tables, outdoor pool tables and what we refer to as kitchen pool tables (indoor pool tables made from solid pine).

However these general categories are for convenience and to facilitate product search. All billiard tables will play any of the table game disciplines by simply substituting ball-sets (Snooker, English Pool, American pool, English Billiards or European Billiards). Although standard ball sizes vary, as do the colouring or numbering configurations, ball sets are available to fit all table sizes and will allow a fun social game to be played. As ball sizes vary between 51mm and 68mm, and as American pool tables are set normally to play at 57mm, they are probably the most flexible of tables for playing an additional combination of English pool and snooker (see figure below)

It is also important to understand that in some of the game categories, particularly the French pool dining tables, it is possible to order tables that can be adapted to play either American pool or English pool (or French pool). The same applies to the Longoni luxury range of pool dining tables. And even with the snooker tables category, it is possible to have bespoke tables made tp play any game discipline. Our range of pine pool tables, which are also made on a private commission basis, can again be made up to any preferred configuration. So if you preferred game is English (or pub-type) Pool you have a much wider choice than is immediately apparent.
