What is an American pool table?

In simple terms, an American pool table is different to an English pool (7ft pub-type) table, in that it is played on a larger table (9ft), uses larger balls, has larger pockets, requires a bouncier rubber-cushion, and plays on a faster playing surface. However, even though there are recognised rules that apply to the game of American pool, there is no reason why any cue-sports game (including English billiards or snooker) cannot be played and enjoyed on a domestic American pool table. A variety of one-size ball-sets can now be supplied for this type of table.

For information on the history of American pool see article by Mike Shamos. To try and unravel the many ambiguities governing the use of language for American pool in particular, and for cue sports in general, try this Wikipedia reference icon for an external link (visit a different website)

The main features of an American pool table

These are the International table standards set by the World Pool-Billiards Association (WPA) icon for an external link (visit a different website) for a full size (9ft) competition table, some, or all of which will be relevant to a decision to purchase your domestic American pool table:

  • Table Bed Height: between 29 ¼ inches and 31 inches

  • Playing Surface: 100 inches x 50 inches (except cushions)

  • Rail and Cushion: the rail width must be between 4 inches and 7½ inches including the rubber cushions.

  • Slates: the thickness must be at least 1 inch. Tournament tables must have a set of slates consisting of three pieces of equal size

  • Pockets: Both drop pockets and automatic ball returns can be used, but must be as noiseless as possible. Drop pockets must have a basket capacity of at least 6 balls.

  • A 5ft perimeter for cueing is recommended (although please note that for competition play, WBA rules require a minimum 6ft cueing perimeter).

American pool table manufacturers

Brunswick Billiards of USA

Brunswick Billiards are the best known global manufacturer of what we know as American pool tables. They have been making tables for over 150 years and have a reputation for solidity and reliability which now sets the international standard for competition play. Their range of domestic tables emulate this competition benchmark in a choice of American pool designer tables second to none

Sam Billiards of Spain

Sam Billiards are the largest European manufacturer of American pool tables and have a well established agency and distributorship in the UK. They are the main supplier of American pool tables to clubs and most UK players' introduction to competitive America pool will probably be as a result of playing on a SAM table, and more likely on the renowned K-Steel table. Sam are primarily involved with the commercial market, although on our SAM parent page we also offer a range of quality American pool tables designed for the domestic market

Longoni Billiards of Italy

Longoni are recognised as the most design-led manufacturer of American pool tables and produce primarily for the domestic market. We feature 6 of the Longoni pool tables on our Longoni parent page, including the Las Vegas - now available in many finishes - and the stunning Villa American pool table.

Billards Plaisance of France

Billards Plaisance are producers of American pool diners and have set new standards in table-design, and in the development of a ball retrieval system that is compatible with competitive play, and dining conviviality. Six Billards Plaisance American pool tables are featured our parent page.
